How often are you distracted by things that don’t really matter? Our world is full of distractions and it is worsening every day. News and information move faster, louder, and brighter than ever before. There is always something new going on; some form of drama- politics, sports, fashion, etc. Something is always calling: relationships, family, work, business, other responsibilities! Then, social media, marketing and entertainment are choking the little space left. Everything is begging for our attention and our focus.
Although, we downplay the distractions and how much they place demands on our attention and our focus, we fail to realise that they are after something bigger… they are targeted at whittling our destinies. You know, our lives are the sum total of all our activities—every moment, every act, everything adds up (or subtracts) from us! Anything that gets our time, emotion and energy has dominance over our lives. That is why the distraction tactic is so on point! Subtle and effective!!
What happens when you allow distractions rule your life? You suffer loss. Because distractions are like bloodsuckers, they drain and frustrate you as they suck the best out of your time, emotions, energy and resources. The harm they cause is obvious, however, at the time of their occurrence, you do not notice. Eventually, your mind is diverted from more important issues to trivial, insignificant and inconsequential. And as you lose focus, you lose direction and begin to flounder. 😵💫😕
Paul draws our attention to the same kind of thing in this passage. He says; So, then, if with Christ you’ve put all that pretentious and infantile religion behind you, why do you let yourselves be bullied by it? So don’t put up with anyone pressuring you in details of diet, worship services, or holy days. All those things are mere shadows cast before what was to come; the substance is Christ… Don’t touch this! Don’t taste that! Don’t go near this!” Do you think things that are here today and gone tomorrow are worth that kind of attention? (Colossians 2:16-17, 20-22). The answer is NO! Look at your life, how many things did you waste precious time and energy on that are no more? ✍🏽✍🏽✍🏽
Think about this word. 🤔
It refers to the real, tangible, authentic, significant.
Imagine the sorrow of realising you spent your whole life chasing shadows 😬🙄 NOW end that bad dream! Wake up and do something about it.
1⃣. Identify your distractions—some could be people, ideas or things.
2⃣. Sideline your distractions—deliberately exclude them.
3⃣. Concentrate on your vision and goals—they make the substance and they matter!
To be great, make what matters matter.
